From garyfuhr at shaw.ca Thu Jul 3 16:40:59 2008 From: garyfuhr at shaw.ca (Gary Fuhr) Date: Thu, 03 Jul 2008 14:40:59 -0700 Subject: [MetroMembers] Reply with your nominee for the Bud Singbeil award! Message-ID: <015301c8dd55$7baa5be0$72ff13a0$@ca> Metro Speakers, Just another reminder as outgoing VP Education I would like to award the Bud Singbeil trophy on July 17. For the benefit of our relatively new members, this award is named after Bud Singbeil, a vibrant toastmaster who was a traveling salesman. Bud was a big husky fellow who sold beauty products for spas and hair salons-proof that you can't judge a book by its cover. Bud traveled a lot and made it a point to check out many Toastmaster clubs while on the road. Marc Hurtubise and Sheree Gable, the new Division J Governor, met him at a conference back at 2003 and he included Metro Speakers in his visit shortly afterwards where he blew those in attendance away with a great table topic and a heartfelt speech during closing comments. Sadly some years ago Bud suddenly passed away. We award the Bud Singbeil plaque in his honour twice a year: once around Christmas and once again at the end of June/beginning of July. The award stands for excellence and dedication in our Toastmaster club. Please take a few moments to think about a member who has made a huge contribution to Metro Speakers this term, January through June 2008. The person does not have to be an executive in order to be considered. For your information, previous winners of this award are Wayne Ostrowercha (Dec 2007), Jason Qi (July 2007 and Ian Sullivan (Dec 2006). Please send a separate email to me or reply to this one and give me your nominees by July 10. Any questions please let me know. Serving as your new Division J governor I am fortunate to have a great team of area governors (including our very own Ricardo) to work with and I look forward to a fabulous Toastmaster year. Recently one of my area governors - Victor Xiao - put together an introduction on himself and I asked him if I could send it to my home club. I admire Victor's story and I wanted to share it with my club members as I think everybody can be inspired from it, and in turn take on new Toastmaster challenges this year just as Victor did by stepping outside of his comfort zone and serving as area 83 governor. I encourage you to make the most of your Toastmaster time: get involved, volunteer for meeting roles, offer to help run special events, or simply stay a few minutes after the meeting and help clean up. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. Kind regards, Sheree Gable Your Division J Governor "I waited for somebody to do something, then I realized I was somebody." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have two weeks with no Chairperson, but the other roles are largely filled. This is the easiest situation for those of you who want to try out chairing, because it makes it very easy to fill in an agenda. There are also three empty speaking spots for this Thursday's speech marathon. If you wish, you could try out Toastmaster on July 17. This will give you practice in giving a very short speech (a toast) and in introducing others. Your confidence and your speaking ability will soar as you take on some of these roles. Be brave, and we will all support you. Wayne __________________________________________________________________ Instant Messaging, free SMS, sharing photos and more... Try the new Yahoo! John C. Maxwell once said the following: "Experience teaches nothing, but evaluated experience teaches everything". I believe in this statement wholeheartedly, and you would benefit a lot from applying this statement to your toastmaster career. The idea of a performance review has long been instilled in the corporate world. If you work at a company, you would most likely have been through a performance evaluation process, and the goal is to to understand your areas of strength and development, so you can learn from the past and set new goals for yourself to ensure continuous growth in the near future. The same idea applies in Toastmasters. It is important to understand how you did as a toastmaster in the past year, in order to effectively plan for the current year. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself: - Did I set concrete goals for myself? - Have I achieved those goals? If not, what were the reasons? - What are my goals for the current year? Are they realistic based on my commitments? - If there were one thing that I need to work on, what would it be? - How can I help someone else in this club? In addition to answering these questions yourself, I also encourage you to work with your mentor to get his/her perspective on your progress in the past year. I hope that you found the past year with Metrospeakers to be an enjoyable and a fruitful one, and I hope that you find the next one to be even more fulfilling.
