Dear fellow members,
In less than two months, the current executive team will be finishing our
duties, and passing the club to a brand new leadership team through a club
election.
John C. Maxwell, one of the most acclaimed modern educators on leadership,
once said that everything rises and falls on leadership. I couldn't agree
more. In a volunteering organization like Metrospeakers, leadership is a
quintessential component of the overall success of the entire organization.
A good leadership team is like glue, which holds all the pieces of the club
together. Without leadership, the club is vulnerable to many kinds of
problems, and could easily fall apart.
Over the course of the past year, I've witnessed many talented members
emerging from Metrospeakers, each possessing a unique set of skills.
However, the abundance of talent is not enough for success. Undirected and
unstructured talents can result in confusion of responsibilities and
misaligned expectations, leading to internal conflicts. Therefore, in order
for club's leadership talents to be efficient and effective, it is necessary
to group the talents into a few functional specializations, or executive
roles.
The executive roles for the 2008-2009 fiscal year will be selected using the
following two step process:
*1. Nomination - May 22nd:*
The nominations will be taking place on May 22nd, one week prior to the
election day, May 29th. Every member who has paid membership due in full is
eligible to nominate others or be nominated. The nominated member will have
one week to decide whether to accept or to decline the nomination.
*2. Election - May 29th:*
The executives will be selected in the following order:
President
Vice-President of Education
Vice-President of Membership
Vice-President of Public Relations
Treasurer
Secretary
Sergent of Arms
For each of the positions mentioned above, the following procedure will be
carried out:
1.
The chair person will first call for any last minute nominations, in
addition to the nominations received in the week prior.
2.
The nominated members will accept or decline the nomination. Once
accepted, a member becomes a candidate.
3.
If there is only one candidate running for a particular role, the
candidate will win by proclamation.
4.
Each candidate is required to deliver a 2 minute speech in front of the
audience, describing the candidate's qualification. The order of the
speakers will be determined by alphabetical order of candidates' last names.
5.
Following the speech, the members are eligible to vote for one of the
candidates.
6.
The ballots will be collected and be counted by two ballot counters.
7.
The result is announced immediately.
8.
In case of a tie, each candidate will be given an additional 30 seconds
to state further qualification, followed by a second round of voting.
9.
Any candidate who is not selected for a role, is eligible to run for any
subsequent roles in the election.
10.
Any vacancies in the in-coming executive team, except for the immediate
past club president, shall be filled in a special election held at another
club meeting.
The out-going executive team will be spending the month of June conducting
knowledge transfer activities with the in-coming executive team.
As you can see, the election is YOUR chance to make an impact on the club,
so either run for a position, or come out to support your nominees!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards,
Kevin Wang
